Bodhana Sivanandan Becomes Youngest Woman Grandmaster
Why in News?
Bodhana Sivanandan, an 11-year-old chess player representing England, became the youngest player ever to fulfil the requirements for the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) title on 27 September 2026 at the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. She secured her third and final WGM norm while playing on England’s top board. FIDE confirmed that the achievement made her the youngest player to qualify for the WGM title.
Sivanandan played all 11 rounds on England’s first board and scored eight points. She had already crossed the required 2,300 rating threshold, making the final norm the remaining requirement for the WGM title.
Woman Grandmaster Title
The Woman Grandmaster (WGM) is the highest FIDE title reserved exclusively for women. It is distinct from the open titles of Grandmaster (GM) and International Master (IM). Players seeking the WGM title must fulfil the required performance norms and rating conditions under FIDE regulations. Sivanandan completed her third WGM norm at the Samarkand Olympiad. She also secured her second International Master (IM) norm during the event. The IM title is an open-category title and has separate rating and norm requirements.
46th Chess Olympiad and Sivanandan’s Achievement
The 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad was held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from 16 to 28 September 2026. It brought together national teams from around the world, with a record number of participating teams in the women’s section.
Sivanandan’s performance for England was notable because she played on Board 1, representing the team’s leading player. Her final score of eight points from 11 games helped her secure the decisive WGM norm.
Previous Youngest WGM Record
Before Sivanandan’s achievement, Kateryna Lagno held the record for the youngest Woman Grandmaster, having achieved the title at the age of 12. Sivanandan broke the age record at just 11 years old.
Her achievement follows several other milestones in 2026. In August, she became Britain’s youngest-ever Women’s Chess Champion at the British Chess Championships.
Sivanandan began playing chess during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 and has since progressed rapidly through international competition.
