Biovigilance Programme of India (BvPI)

Why in News?

The Government of India has announced the Biovigilance Programme of India (BvPI) to strengthen patient safety in organ and tissue transplantation. The announcement was made on 21 September 2026 during the 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week programme in New Delhi.

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) will lead the monitoring of adverse events associated with organ and tissue transplantation. The initiative expands India’s existing medicine and medical-device safety-monitoring framework. (PIB)

What is Biovigilance?

Biovigilance refers to the systematic monitoring, detection, assessment and prevention of adverse events associated with biological products and biological materials used in healthcare. In transplantation medicine, safety monitoring is important because patients may experience complications related to transplanted organs, tissues, biological materials or associated treatments. The programme aims to strengthen the identification and reporting of safety concerns and support evidence-based measures for improving patient outcomes.

Institutional Framework

The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) will coordinate the monitoring of adverse events associated with organ and tissue transplantation under the Biovigilance Programme. The IPC is an organisation under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It is associated with drug-quality standards and serves as the National Coordination Centre for the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI).

Pharmacovigilance, Materiovigilance and Biovigilance

India has established different safety-monitoring systems for healthcare products:

ProgrammeMain Focus
PharmacovigilanceAdverse drug reactions and medicine safety
MateriovigilanceAdverse events associated with medical devices
BiovigilanceSafety monitoring of biological products and transplantation-related biological materials

These systems support the broader objective of strengthening patient safety and healthcare regulation.

National Pharmacovigilance Week 2026

The 6th National Pharmacovigilance Week is being observed from 17 to 23 September 2026. Its theme is “Promoting Rational Use of Medicines through Pharmacovigilance: A Step Towards Safer Healthcare.” During the 21 September programme, the government also released the 7th Edition of the National Formulary of India 2026, its digital version, and safety-monitoring guidance for medical devices.
