BIO-NIVESH: Biotechnology Platform to Connect Research with Investment
Why in News?
BIO-NIVESH was launched on 3 September 2026 in New Delhi by Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh. The platform was created by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) and the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC). BIO-NIVESH aims to connect laboratory-stage biotechnology research with commercial scale-up and private investment. It seeks to strengthen India’s biotechnology innovation ecosystem by helping promising technologies move towards market deployment.
What is BIO-NIVESH?
BIO-NIVESH functions as a bridge between biotechnology innovators and investors. The platform was introduced during a joint roundtable conference involving more than 20 biotechnology and deep-tech startups and around 50 private investors. It can help innovators showcase technologies with potential for commercialisation. Investors can assess opportunities based on factors such as intellectual property, technology readiness and market potential.
Role in India’s Biotechnology Ecosystem
India’s biotechnology sector covers several emerging areas. These include:
- Healthcare and pharmaceuticals
- Agriculture and agricultural biotechnology
- Industrial biotechnology
- Bio-manufacturing
- Genetic and molecular technologies
However, promising laboratory research often requires substantial funding before commercial deployment. BIO-NIVESH addresses this research-to-market gap by encouraging interaction between researchers, startups and private capital.
BIRAC and Biotechnology Innovation
The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) plays an important role in supporting biotechnology innovation and entrepreneurship in India. BIRAC has also been designated as a Second-Level Fund Manager for the central government’s Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund. The RDI Fund has an outlay of ₹1 lakh crore and aims to support research-linked innovation financing. This institutional arrangement can strengthen funding opportunities for emerging technologies and innovative businesses.
Why is BIO-NIVESH Important?
The platform supports India’s broader objective of building a strong biotechnology innovation ecosystem. It can facilitate collaboration among researchers, startups, investors and industry. Such collaboration is essential for converting scientific discoveries into commercially viable products and services.
