
Bhargavastra: India’s Indigenous Counter-Swarm Drone Systeme
Why in News?
Bhargavastra, an indigenous vehicle-mounted Counter-Swarm Drone System, was demonstrated to the Indian Army at Solar Defence and Aerospace Ltd. (SDAL), Nagpur, on 24 July 2026. The demonstration took place during a Make-II programme status review. The system is designed to counter the growing threat of weaponised drones, loitering munitions, and coordinated drone swarms.
What is Bhargavastra?
Bhargavastra is an indigenous hard-kill counter-drone system developed by Solar Defence and Aerospace Ltd. (SDAL). Unlike soft-kill systems that jam signals, Bhargavastra physically destroys hostile drones using rockets and guided missiles. The system is fully integrated, vehicle-mounted, and designed for rapid deployment on the battlefield.
How does the system work?
Bhargavastra uses a dual-layer interception mechanism.
- The first layer fires unguided micro-rockets with a lethal radius of 20 metres.
- The second layer launches precision-guided micro-missiles with an interception range of 2.5 km.
The system combines:
- Radar for long-range detection.
- Electro-Optical/Infrared (EO/IR) sensors for day and night tracking.
- Passive Radio Frequency (RF) detectors.
- C4I (Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence) architecture for real-time target assignment.
It can detect large UAVs up to 10 km away and smaller drones up to 6 km.
Why is Bhargavastra important?
Drone warfare has transformed modern battlefields. Conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia have shown that inexpensive drones can threaten military bases, armour, and critical infrastructure. Bhargavastra offers India a cost-effective indigenous solution against drone swarms that are difficult to neutralise using conventional air defence systems. It also strengthens the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence manufacturing.

The demonstration showcased the complete engagement sequence. Sensors detected and tracked a drone swarm before the C4I system generated a real-time air picture and assigned targets to the launcher. Live rocket firing was not conducted due to safety restrictions. SDAL expects to complete internal trials within two to three months. The company also believes Bhargavastra will support the proposed Sudarshan Chakra multi-layer air defence programme, planned with engagement ranges of 2.5 km, 6 km, and 25 km by 2030.
