2nd Bharat Green Hydrogen Summit 2026

Why in News?

The 2nd Bharat Green Hydrogen Summit 2026 was held on 23 July 2026 in New Delhi. It was organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI).

The summit focused on green hydrogen, hydrogen-based mobility, industrial decarbonisation and export competitiveness. Its theme was “Positioning India as a Global Hydrogen Hub.”

What is Green Hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is hydrogen produced through electrolysis of water using renewable electricity, such as solar or wind power.

During electrolysis, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen. When renewable energy powers this process, hydrogen can be produced with very low associated carbon emissions.

Major Uses of Green Hydrogen

Green hydrogen can help decarbonise sectors where direct electrification is difficult. Major applications include:

  • Fertiliser industry – production of green ammonia.
  • Petroleum refining – replacement of fossil-based hydrogen.
  • Steel industry – low-carbon steel production.
  • Heavy transport – hydrogen fuel-cell trucks, buses and trains.
  • Energy storage – storage of surplus renewable electricity.
  • Shipping and exports – use of hydrogen derivatives such as green ammonia.

National Green Hydrogen Mission

The National Green Hydrogen Mission is India’s flagship programme for developing a domestic green hydrogen ecosystem. The Union Government approved the Mission in January 2023, with an initial outlay of ₹19,744 crore. It aims to make India a global hub for the production, utilisation and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

Key focus areas include:

  • Domestic manufacturing of electrolysers.
  • Green hydrogen production capacity.
  • Development of Green Hydrogen Hubs.
  • Research and development.
  • Creation of demand in hard-to-abate industries.
  • Development of hydrogen storage and transport infrastructure.

The Mission targets at least 5 million metric tonnes (MMT) of annual green hydrogen production capacity by 2030.

India’s Green Hydrogen Potential

At the summit, India’s renewable energy capacity, industrial base and export potential were highlighted as major advantages. Gujarat was highlighted for its renewable energy resources, ports, industrial infrastructure and state-level green hydrogen policy framework. India is also seeking to build a competitive domestic supply chain for electrolysers, renewable energy and hydrogen derivatives.
