Bhadohi Renamed Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi
The Uttar Pradesh government has renamed Bhadohi district as Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the change on 4 October 2026 during a programme in the district. The announcement was made alongside the inauguration and foundation-laying of 112 development projects worth more than ₹1,340 crore. The renaming restores a name previously associated with the district while retaining Bhadohi, which is widely known for its carpet industry.
Bhadohi District and Its Formation
Bhadohi was carved out of Varanasi district and became the 65th district of Uttar Pradesh on 30 June 1994. The district is internationally known for its carpet industry, particularly its handwoven carpets and carpet-weaving traditions. The industry is an important source of employment and economic activity in the region.
Why was Bhadohi Renamed?
The new name incorporates the name of Sant Ravidas, the medieval Indian saint associated with the Bhakti tradition. Sant Ravidas, also known as Ravidas or Raidas, is remembered for his spiritual teachings and emphasis on social equality and devotion. The Uttar Pradesh government stated that the renaming seeks to honour his legacy and connect the district’s identity with his teachings.
