Why in News?
Scientists have discovered a new spider species, popularly nicknamed the ballista spider, in the rainforests of far north Queensland, Australia. Belonging to the genus Propostira of the Theridiidae (cobweb spider) family, the species is attracting global attention for its extraordinary spring-loaded silk trap that catapults prey into its web. The spider has not yet been assigned a formal scientific name.

The newly discovered ballista spider belongs to the Theridiidae family, commonly known as cobweb spiders, which are famous for constructing irregular silk webs to capture prey. The genus Propostira includes species that rely on innovative silk-based hunting techniques rather than active pursuit.

Unique Spring-Loaded Hunting Mechanism
The ballista spider employs a remarkable spring-loaded web trap to capture green tree ants (Oecophylla smaragdina). The trap is activated when an ant bites a specially constructed silk cone, instantly releasing stored elastic energy in the silk.

Research Findings
The unusual hunting behaviour was first observed in 2022 by biomedical researcher Greg Anderson. Detailed observations were later conducted in 2023 by Professor Ajay Narendra and Pranav Joshi using high-speed and infrared cameras. The findings, published in Current Biology, demonstrate how spider silk can efficiently store and release elastic energy for rapid prey capture.
