India Participates in ASEAN-India and East Asia Summit Economic Ministers’ Meetings 2026

Why in News?

India participated in the 14th East Asia Summit (EAS) Economic Ministers’ Meeting and the 23rd ASEAN-India Economic Ministers Consultation held in Manila, Philippines, in September 2026. The meetings focused on regional economic cooperation, trade and investment flows, supply chain resilience, and the wider economic outlook. India’s delegation was led by Nitin Kumar Yadav, Additional Secretary, Department of Commerce.

East Asia Summit Economic Ministers’ Meeting

The East Asia Summit is a leaders-led regional forum established in 2005. Its economic ministers’ meetings support discussions on trade, investment, economic integration, and regional cooperation.

The 14th EAS Economic Ministers’ Meeting discussed strengthening trade and investment linkages, digital transformation, energy security, and sustainable economic development. The participating countries include ASEAN members and EAS partners such as India, Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Russia, and the United States.

ASEAN-India Economic Cooperation

India became a sectoral dialogue partner of ASEAN in 1992 and a summit-level partner in 2002. The ASEAN-India economic relationship is supported by the ASEAN-India Free Trade Area (AIFTA) framework, which includes trade in goods, services, and investment.

The ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA) entered into force in 2010. It provides a framework for tariff commitments and trade facilitation between India and ASEAN member states.

Trade and Investment Relations

According to preliminary ASEAN statistics, two-way ASEAN-India trade reached USD 114.1 billion in 2025, while Indian FDI inflows into ASEAN stood at USD 7.1 billion. The ASEAN Secretariat identified India as ASEAN’s eighth-largest trading partner and ninth-largest source of FDI in 2025.

The meetings also addressed the regional and global economic outlook for 2027. The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) presented a paper on energy security and industrial clusters in the EAS region.
