Akash air defence system
India has expanded the international footprint of its indigenous Akash air defence system, with Tajikistan and Turkmenistan becoming export destinations as of 1 October 2026. The development highlights India’s growing capabilities in defence production and its emergence as an exporter of indigenous military technology.
Akash Air Defence System
The Akash is an indigenous short- to medium-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
The system is designed to protect important installations and military formations from a range of aerial threats. Its capabilities include engagement of:
- Fighter aircraft
- Cruise missiles
- Guided munitions
- Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)
Akash uses an integrated network of radars, launchers and command systems for detecting, tracking and engaging aerial targets.
Akash Export Customers
Armenia was the first foreign customer for the Akash system and acquired multiple batteries. Subsequently, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan emerged as additional export destinations.
The expansion of Akash exports reflects India’s increasing focus on defence exports under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. It also strengthens India’s defence-industrial engagement with countries in the Central Asian region.
Production and Indigenous Defence Manufacturing
The Akash system is produced by major Indian defence public-sector enterprises, particularly Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).
BDL is involved in missile production, while BEL contributes to important electronic systems associated with India’s air-defence capabilities. Continued procurement of Akash by the Indian Armed Forces has also helped establish a stable domestic production base.
The system therefore represents an important example of India’s transition from being primarily a defence importer to becoming an increasingly significant defence technology exporter.
Significance for India
Akash exports have strategic and economic significance. They strengthen India’s defence partnerships, expand the market for indigenous defence equipment and support the growth of India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.
