Uttar Pradesh Crosses 1 GW Rooftop Solar Capacity Under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Uttar Pradesh becomes India’s third state to exceed 1 GW residential rooftop solar capacity under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. Over 2.9 lakh homes benefit with faster payback, significant savings, and environmental gains.

PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

Uttar Pradesh has achieved a major renewable energy milestone by surpassing 1,000 MW of residential rooftop solar capacity under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. With this achievement, UP has become the third state in India — after Gujarat and Maharashtra — to cross the 1-GW benchmark, showing strong momentum in household-level clean energy adoption.

Rapid Installations Drive Solar Growth Across Districts under PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana

More than 2.90 lakh households have installed rooftop solar systems, adding 1,003.64 MW of capacity. Another 2.93 lakh families are already benefiting from free or low-cost power.

In the current financial year alone, UP added nearly 640 MW of rooftop installations — among the fastest adoption rates in the country. This expansion directly supports India’s goal of distributing up to 300 free electricity units per month under the national scheme.

Subsidies Shorten Payback Period for Consumers

Uttar Pradesh remains one of the biggest beneficiaries of the government’s rooftop solar subsidy program:

ComponentSupport Provided
Central Government Subsidy₹1,999 crore
Uttar Pradesh State Subsidy₹600 crore (approx.)
Household Incentives₹15,000 per kW up to 2 kW
Max Subsidy₹1.08 lakh for a 3-kW system

The payback period of a 3-kW system in UP is only 20 months, compared to:

  • 30 months – national average
  • 54 months – without subsidies

This favorable economics is encouraging rapid adoption among middle-class and rural households.
