India’s indigenous artillery capabilities received a major boost as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully conducted the maiden flight test of the Pinaka Long Range Guided Rocket (LRGR-120) from the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Odisha. The test marks a critical milestone in the modernisation of the Indian Army’s rocket artillery. It reinforces India’s push towards precision-guided, long-range strike systems under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Maiden Flight Test Demonstrates Full Range and Precision

During the trial, the LRGR-120 was tested for its maximum strike range of 120 kilometres. The rocket executed all planned flight manoeuvres. It accurately hit its designated target. Defence officials described this as “textbook precision”. The successful outcome validated the rocket’s guidance, navigation, and control systems. This confirmed its readiness for further user trials. It also indicated its eventual induction.

Major Upgrade Over Existing Pinaka Rockets

The LRGR-120 is a significant advancement over earlier unguided Pinaka variants. It features an advanced guidance package. This package combines inertial navigation, mid-course updates, and terminal correction. These elements dramatically reduce circular error probable (CEP). This enhanced accuracy allows precise engagement of high-value targets. These include enemy artillery positions, command and control centres, and logistics nodes. These engagements occur at extended ranges. Crucially, the new rocket is compatible with existing Pinaka launchers, enabling capability enhancement without new platforms.

Strategic Context and Defence Procurement Push

The successful test coincided with the Defence Acquisition Council’s clearance of defence procurement proposals. These proposals are worth around ₹79,000 crore and cover the Army, Navy, and Air Force. These approvals cover multiple items. They include long-range guided rocket ammunition for Pinaka. They also include loitering munitions, lightweight radars, and advanced drone detection and counter-UAS systems. This reflects India’s broader shift towards precision, network-centric, and indigenous defence capabilities.
