India and Maldives have begun the 14th edition of their annual bilateral military exercise Ekuverin, hosted this year in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. The joint training programme, held from December 2 to 15, 2025, reinforces the strong defence cooperation between the two maritime neighbours and supports shared security priorities in the Indian Ocean Region.
Training Focus: CI/CT and Coastal Operations
The Ekuverin exercise involves troops from the Indian Army and Maldives National Defence Force conducting combined drills in:
- Counter-Insurgency (CI) and Counter-Terrorism (CT) operations
- Semi-urban combat training
- Coastal and jungle warfare
- Joint room intervention, surveillance and reconnaissance
This edition includes specialised modules for niche military technologies, unmanned systems and intelligence-driven operational planning.
Strengthening Regional Security and Interoperability
Officials emphasised that Ekuverin enhances:
- Interoperability for real-time joint responses
- Maritime and coastal defence preparedness
- Mutual trust and strategic alignment
Regular exercises aim to counter emerging security risks such as terrorism, extremism and transnational threats in the Indian Ocean Region. India continues to assist Maldives with training, capacity building and infrastructure support across military domains.
